Met Gala 2014: Best Dressed

Vogue‘s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, is responsible for the biggest annual fashion event the world has ever seen. The Met Gala raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The ball is seen as the most exclusive social event in New York City with $12 million raised for the institute in 2013. Celebrities from all corners of showbiz attend the gala and individual tickets for people not on the official guest list cost a whopping $25,000. The Met Gala has a theme each year and this year’s was Charles James: Beyond Fashion. The most prestigious event in the world of fashion was held at the beginning of May and every man and woman who attended looked at home in glitz and glamour on the famous red carpet. I have chosen my personal best dressed women from the event, which was not an easy task. Starting things off with the most unusual yet appealing and chic dress of the night from Chanel.

This perfect-fitting and unique design is unusual but perfect for the Twilight star. The Chanel Couture design features a sequined black and gold upper half with a matching waist-hugging element separating the grey and black feathered skirt. The dress includes a black mesh undercoat with the same sequins from the thigh to Kristen’s shin, where she’s finished the look off with plain black heels. Chanel’s long-sleeved neck-high design is a great unique design for the actress and I think she matched the outfit well with her hair and makeup; nothing too fancy but not under-done either. A great smoky eye with a curled side-fringe and back braid through her red hair looked casual but stunning.

Looking simple and stunning in this Oscar de la Renta gown is Sex and the City star, Sarah Jessica Parker. As one of the first guests to strut their stuff on the red carpet, the actress made a firm imprint on the paparazzi with her bold statement dress and never-seen-before hair style. The dress’ simple layout was a perfect fit for Sarah and she perfected the look with her elbow-length white satin gloves. The black and faded pink of the dress suited her and I think she looked so elegant and graceful in her Oscar de la Renta design. The actress’ hair was an obvious stand-out and took the attention of many watchers. As did the back of her dress, turning many heads on her down the carpet and her designer’s name branded on the back of her gown.

Vogue‘s 2013 Model of the Year did what she does best at this year’s Met Gala. British model Cara Delevingne strutted her way down her glowing red runway in her Stella McCartney design. Mixing up the theme of elegant and eye-catching gowns this year, Cara’s sophisticated and classy outfit was the perfect look for her. The black and white theme was certainly popular at this year’s fundraiser, and the Victoria’s Secret model did a fabulous job of keeping her outfit different and memorable. The revealing yet chic and cultured top looked great on Cara and the white waist-high pants looked amazing. Black and white heels topped off the Stella McCartney masterpiece as well as a black clutch. I think Cara’s hair is perfect for this outfit because it’s not simple but it’s not too overpowering or fancy either. It’s just in between and utterly flawless.

It’s not very often one can make a soft pink and a hot pink work together, but The Amazing Spiderman and The Help star can sure rock it down the bright red carpet. I don’t think this Thakoon knit design would have worked on anyone other than Emma Stone. Her strawberry blonde hair suits the outfit very well colour-wised. The cropped knitted top is a beautiful colour and surprisingly matches very well with the bold, fuchsia-draped skirt. The split along the left leg is classy and elegant, and the actress looked utterly graceful gliding her way down the carpet with her on-and-off screen boyfriend, Andrew Garfield.  With no jewelry needed, her silver strapped shoes and matching clutch make for faultless finishing touches on this Thakoon design. Emma and Andrew were one of the cutest couples of the night, and it was their first red-carpet event that wasn’t for the Spiderman movie.

Wearing this Yigit Ozcakmak design is former Victoria’s Secret model and actress, Karolina Kurkova. I’ve never not had an opinion on an outfit, but for the first time in my life, I’m literally speechless. I have no words for this elegant, eye-catching, chic gown by Ozcakmak. It looks utterly beautiful on the supermodel and I think it is such a unique and perfect dress for the Met Gala. The two-layered dress was navy blue with floral patterns on both layers. I’m glad she wore her hair in a slick bun because it gives you more opportunity to admire the dress and the beautiful design. My favourite element of this gown is the pointed tip on the right side of Karolina’s shoulder. I think this feature makes a bold statement and it absolutely flawless for the institute fundraiser.

British singer-songwriter Rita Ora looked spectacular in this Donna Karen design. The cream coloured tight-fitting gown was simple indescribable. The leg-split on the left made the dress was it was, showing off the amazing matching pair of heels with shined gold straps up to her thigh. The strapless sequined dress also looked great with the matching mesh material up her right arm, tying in with the gold theme. I think the mesh on the right side of the dress perfects the dress and gives it a bold, fashionable and chic look. Her sleek and sophisticated hair style suited the gown to perfection and everyone knows you can never go wrong with a red lip. This unique Donna Karen design is a perfect gown for the Met Gala and with those shoes, it caught the attention of, yeah, pretty much everyone.

R&B singer Rihanna looked so amazing on the red carpet that she made the top of my list. Her two-piece Stella McCartney design is beautiful and I love the fact that you can see her tattoos. Her top and skirt are both so elegant and I think her tattoos piece the outfit together as if it were made for her. The fact that we can see them gives the chic outfit that rock edge we all know Rihanna has and it really shows us who she is as a person. The full-white, floor-length, draped skirt is magnificent on its own, and I love that it is folded near her hips and waist. It’s a figure-hugging outfit and she definitely has the body to flaunt it. I don’t think this look would have worked if the top was short-sleeved and I love that it has a diamond halter-neck to finish off the Donna Karen design. Rihanna’s hair looks chic and stylish in a messy pony and I think it’s faultless with her gown of choice.

Last but definitely not least, we can’t forget the creator of it all, the reason this flawless annual fashion event arises on our calendars each year, the editor-in-chief of the world-renowned Vogue magazine, Anna Wintour.
