The Met Gala 2015: Through the Looking Glass

This time 12 months ago I covered the biggest event that fashion has ever seen. The Met Gala has once again returned for 2015 and it might have some of the most eccentric and wild outfits yet. Raising funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, the biggest names in fashion are invited to attend the ball and all eyes are on the red carpet. 225 photographers and reporters attended the annual fundraiser to document the historical event of fashion, and they will not disappoint. Thanks to Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, the Met Gala is the event that fashion lovers look forward to every single year in New York City since 1946. Last year had some stunning gowns and you can look at the best ones on last year’s story: Met Gala 2014: Best Dressed.

This year, the theme is China: Through the Looking Glass. Of course we were expecting to see some outrageous fashion, and the celebs attending have done exactly that.

Sarah Jessica Parker is mostly known for her part as fashion-addict Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, and her outfit at the gala was a total resemblance of Miss Bradshaw. Her flawless headpiece was designed and made by Philip Treacy. Sarah’s dress was also stunning, although I’m not sure it would have worked without the headpiece. The train was very classy and the simple dress hugged her hips flawlessly. The headpiece is the main attraction of the outfit and it definitely works with the theme of the event. An outrageous choice to some, but I love the boldness and uniqueness of it. A very impressive and adventurous choice from Carrie Bradshaw herself.

A controversial outfit was one by Beyonce’s sister, Solange. A very audacious styling choice by Solange Knowles, she strutted her stuff on the red carpet in her Giles Deacon dress looking as chic as ever. As I looked through the red carpet pictures of the Gala, I first saw this outfit and was mainly confused. It’s a beautiful piece of art but I’m unsure as to whether it is red carpet material. If her arms were visible, things might be a little different. Solange was daring with her outfit, but I think she would have looked stunning in a tight-fitted silk dress, still fitting to the theme of the Met Gala.

I was most looking forward to see the chosen outfit of Kim Kardashian. I was surprised by how tamed her outfit was considering to what I had pictured in my mind earlier. Her Robert Cavalli gown was inspired by the dress that her idol Cher wore to the very first Met Gala in 1946. I think Kim looked ravishingly elegant in her gown and she pulled it off to perfection. With Kanye by her side, what else did we expect? The detail in her Cavalli design was so intricate and I adore the feathered train. It stood out on the red carpet and of course, all eyes were on her. With slicked hair and long sleeves, Kimmy K surprised us all with her class and elegance.

Who else would we expect to totally own the red carpet other than Rihanna? Her gown was handcrafted by a Chinese woman and it took her a whopping two years to design and make it. Taking up the entire staircase (yes, the entire thing), Rihanna draped her magnificent fur cape behind her leaving people in awe of the design. The vibrant colour matched her skin tone and she pulled it off so well that she was one of the best dressed at the event. At first glance, we were a little undecided. But it was such a unique, classy and very fitting outfit for the 2015 Met Gala.

FKA Twigs brought excitement and controversy to the 2015 Met Gala. On the bright side, she totally rocked the red carpet showcasing her brand new engagement ring with her lovely fiancée by her side, Robert Pattinson. Controversy struck when people took close notice of her stunning Christopher Kane designed dress, which featured erotic patterns of genitalia. But even so, she totally owned it and was one of my favourites on the red carpet. I love that it looks like a piece of art and she wore it so very well. It totally suited her personal style and of course the theme of China: Through the Looking Glass.

From the waist up, it is simple, classy and chic. A very feminine neck line and a beautiful one at that. I am totally in love with the train of the dress and the design. I love that it drapes and blends into the carpet but it also doesn’t drop height until further away from her body. It sits outwards before falling to the ground and Zendaya Coleman totally owned the stage. Her gorgeous headpiece looked stunning with her hair style being simple and out. Another one of my favourite outfits from the night.

A little less extravagant but totally gorgeous, these ladies have taken the red carpet by storm.

Strutting her stuff at the fundraiser was the new face of Burberry for 2015, top model Jourdan Dunn. She looked so stunning in this burgundy, tight-fitted gown. It fits her figure to perfection and I love the split through the front. Low V necks are wildly popular at the moment (we saw a lot of these at the 2015 Logie Awards in Australia recently). Jourdan’s hair styled in cornrows matches the outfit so well and it was hard to keep eyes off her on the carpet.

Blending in with the elegance of the red carpet, American actress Allison Williams wore this stunning Giambattista Valli Couture ball gown. I’m not usually one for red on the red carpet, but I’m always one for big dresses and Allison has totally pulled off the red-on-red. It’s so classy and fitting to the theme of the event. Having a small figure, she would have looked gorgeous in a mermaid-style gown, but she still rocked this amazing gown on the carpet.

My favourite gown from the evening was designed by the wonderful Versace and worn by the very exquisite Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Hair slicked back, bold deep red lipstick and a simple dress – she totally nailed the theme and the elegance of the famous red carpet. I love the soft pink of the dress and the one-shouldered sleeve. I utterly adore the leg spit and the tight-fitted look suits Rosie and her figure beautifully. I don’t have much else to say about her outfit for China: Through the Looking Glass. She nailed it.

People are having mixed opinions about the jumpsuit of top model Cara Delevingne. It’s very chic and Cara being Cara has been totally adventurous with the fake floral tattoos. She turned an elegant one-piece into a punk and utterly awesome outfit. Her outgoing and vibrant personality comes across in her outfit. The wonders of fashion are truly being showcased at this year’s Met Gala. And who better to do it than one of the world’s biggest models of now? I love the simplicity of the jumpsuit and the extra ‘something’ on the top half.

The Met Gala for 2015 was a total success if you ask me. Not that I was there, but it looked incredible. Thank you to the incredible Anna Wintour for running such an amazing event that raises funds for a very good cause and also keeps us fashion lovers on our toes once a year. I would assume that next year’s benefit will be even bigger and better than this year’s.
