“Camp: Notes on Fashion” | The Best Dressed From the Met Gala 2019

Camp style disrupts the norms of fashion, turning it into high art. It is controversial, extravagant, tongue-in-cheek and outrageous. What more could you ask for from this year’s annual Met Gala?

Co-hosted by Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and VOGUE Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, fashion lovers from around the world have been eagerly awaiting this day – where the most incredible fashion looks come out to shock the world. The annual fundraising event expects its invite-only guests to dress accordingly to the new Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institution’s exhibit, Camp: Notes on Fashion. Tickets generally sell for a mere $40,000 a pop. Who’s coming with me next year?!

The pink carpet is almost a sneak-peak to what awaits inside the New York art exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton, but in a designer brand, high fashion sort of way.

There were plenty of hits and misses for 2019, as there are every year. And, following tradition, I compiled a list of my personal best gala celebrities. I loved about 50 outfits this year, but I don’t want to bore you with that (I actually do. But it’s most likely frowned upon..). Let’s start with the most ‘extra’ of the lot, and something that has never been seen on the Met Gala runway:

Lady Gaga 1Lady Gaga 2The 2019 Met Gala Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion - ArrivalsLady Gaga 4

That’s right. Not one look. Not two, or even three. Gaga slayed the first 15 minutes of the pink carpet in FOUR different looks. If the dress code is extravagant and over-the-top, then look no further. She killed it. Gaga arrived to the event in a gigantic fuchsia gown, with over-sized eyelashes to match, surrounded by men in suits holding umbrellas – as we all do, of course. Then, she began to morph into a stunning black gown, using one of said umbrellas as a prop. Just when we thought the reveal was done, she slips out of her black gown into a figure-hugging bright pink dress, with large, classic Gaga sunglasses and a telephone as a prop. And another one – she stripped down into her undergarments, in her absolute Gaga-of-ways, revealing a jewelled bra, underwear, stockings and matching heels. If you could win the Met Gala, then Lady Gaga won the Met Gala.

Who invited Cinderella to the ball? Zendaya Coleman is always a stand-out at the Met Gala, but wow – what a performance. Already looking stunning in a tulle gown with puffed sleeves and a slightly revealing neckline, Zendaya’s fairy godmother came to spice things up a little. Waving her magic wand, the dress began to light up from the bottom, through the middle and all the way to the sleeves. A stunning Cinderella-blue illuminated the gown, turning Zendaya into a literal Disney princess. Dreams really do come true! If you get invited to the Met Gala, that is.

Michael Urie 1Michael Urie 2

This one took my breath away – representing the drag queens of the fashion industry, Michael Urie turned heads in his half baby pink gown – half tuxedo, keeping the entire look feminine, with just a hint of his natural masculinity. The thing I love most about this look is that he has a natural face and hair with diamond jewellery and tattoos on the ‘dress’ side – yet, also has a full face of make-up, curled hair, heels and diamonds with the ‘tuxedo’ side. It is a complete mix of both femininity and masculinity and Urie absolutely took the meaning of ‘camp’ to a whole new level. Camp is a style loved by many in the drag community, and it was incredible to experience this kind of never-before seen look on the pink carpet in recognition of the LGBTQI+ community.

Laverne Cox 2Laverne Cox

Transgender actress Laverne Cox, mostly known for her popular role on Orange is The New Black, went all out for the camp-themed Met Gala. With stunning bold make-up and aqua hair to match, her black floor-length gown is one of my favourites from the pink carpet. The detailing in the dress is extreme, and I adore the collar and flared sleeves of the dress. Such an intricate design, yet totally extra for the runway.

Kylie and KendallKylieKendall

Extra, extra, read all about it! Or, just look for the Jenners. The feathers, the hair, the make-up – it’s too perfect to be true. Kylie’s big feathered, purple wrap and Kendall’s giant orange feathered collar and floor-length gown, the Jenner sisters were two of my favourites from the entire event. Not usually being a fan of the Kardashian-Jenner clan (yes, I confess..), I was completely in awe of these custom designs and think they look even more flawless as a duo, complimenting the colours on one another and flaunting two different, beautiful body shapes and figures.

Ezra MillerEzra Miller

Looks like ‘camp’ was a winner for the men this year. Actor Ezra Miller was turning heads – and eyes – with his unique seven-eyed pink carpet look. With a diamond corset, pinstriped tuxedo and a memorable make-up look, Ezra was an all-round favourite of the Met Gala. With acting skills coming in handy on the runway, the performance from Ezra sold his look to the audience – a stand out from the men in attendance and one of my favourites from the 2019 Met Gala.

Gigi Hadid 1Gigi Hadid 2

I’ve always loved Gigi, and if it’s possible, I fell more in love with her today. This make-up look with the fanned-out, pure white lashes all around the eyes, fully-covered head with just a few tufts of hair showing, and her entire body covered with sequins, Gigi killed it. She proves that you don’t need to wear minimal clothing to be fashionable (sorry Gaga), with the only skin visible being Gigi’s face and hands. The sequinned cape and matching boots, the jewel earrings, she is all over perfection and the definition of camp fashion.

Katy PerryKaty Perry 2

Who other than Katy Perry could rock a chandelier-inspired dress and get away with it? At a first glance, I immediately thought she was a candle – I’m not going to lie. But, upon further examination, I came to love this look. Katy Perry is most definitely extravagant and over-the-top, much like the dress code she was given. Her hair and make-up looks stunning, and although I’m still questioning how she sat down once she was off the runway, I do love a good sparkling, diamond chandelier. You go, KP!

Lily Collins 2Lily Collins 1

My top hair and make-up look from the Met Gala goes to Lily Collins. For once, I have no words (that’s a sign that something is really, REALLY good). The emerald green jewellery, purple eyeshadow, foundation-coloured lips and big, bold hair – that’s camp to a tee. Gigi was a winner for make-up in my eyes, but Lily takes the cake for overall beauty at the Met Gala this year. I can’t stop looking at it… help.

Some other stand-outs that I absolutely had to include are Aquaria, Cara Delevingne, Jared Leto, Celine Dion and Cardi B.

If your opinion differs from mine, please reach out – I would love to see who you think killed it and who didn’t quite do the job. Another Met Gala has come and gone, thanks to the iconic Anna Wintour and her team. Ah, another year goes by..

Until next time..
