What They Wore: The 33rd ARIA Awards

Red carpets are the ultimate crime scene for the fashion police. Australian icons walk towards the paparazzi and in front of thousands of people, knowing that social media is having a potential meltdown over their style choices. What a time to be alive!

As expected, this year’s ARIA Awards were jam-packed with fashion do’s and don’ts, controversy (when Hilltop Hoods finished their speech with “Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself” in the very first award announcement..), and near-misses with Sophie Monk almost showing all of Australia her left boob while holding a snake on stage with Robert Irwin. Iconic.

Controversy aside, we are here for the tea on what the who’s-who in Australian media wore for the special night of music, and as usual, they did not disappoint.

Zara McDonald & Michelle Andrews

Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews

Zara and Michelle are two Aussie journalists known for their popular podcast, Shameless. I’m going to say it – these pant suits are STUNNING. Both are custom Effie Kats sets, they look classy, very on-trend and like down-right girl bosses. The lilac and pale yellow compliment each other so well and though there’s no glitz and glamour, they are two of my favourite looks from the night.

Tones & I

Toni Watson ruled the night when it came to music, taking home 4 ARIA Awards despite only releasing her first single a mere six months ago. Tones also repped a custom Effie Kats outfit, with one of her recent song titles, The Kids Are Coming, hand-painted over the trench coat. I honestly don’t have much to say about the whole look, other than *cough cough* Billie Eilish look-a-like, much? She also dressed as a grandpa with a purple glitter beard to perform Dance Monkey. Next.

Samantha Jade

I loved this look as soon as I laid eyes on it. The simple hair and make-up and the lack of jewelery and accessories won it over for me. The Barbie-pink dress is an entire look in itself – it needed to have it’s moment, and thank the lord it did. A custom Sant Elia couture piece, the fit is stunning and I think SJ just killed this one.

She’s not Australian, but we must talk about her. Halsey graced the red carpet in a custom Collina Strada two-piece set, with artistic make-up to match. Collina Strada is a brand that represents climate and social awareness, and is 100% sustainable and ethically-sourced. Get it, Halsey! I’m obsessed with the outfit alone, and then to add such a simple-yet-effective eye look to match? I’m deceased. Halsey radiated elegance and class, and you can 100% tell she’s an international superstar.

Carly Rae Jepsen

I’m sorry, WHO IS SHE? The Call Me Maybe mega-pop star appeared on the red carpet in an Alex Perry design, although somewhat underwhelmingly. She rocked a platinum blonde bob (very different from the long black bangs we all knew and loved), and.. well, that’s kind of it. Dare I say she’s… basic.

Tanya Hennessy

I’m OBSESSED with this dress. And to make it even more amazing, it is a custom piece by Tasmanian glitter queen and designer, Glitter Is A Neutral. Comedian, radio presenter, author and now beauty guru, Tanya Hennessy, looked absolutely stunning in this dress and we thank her for representing a local Tassie gal!

The Veronicas

Very Kylie and Kendall Jenner at the Met Gala vibes, in regards to the near-identical design and colour-coordination.. but, I’m not complaining! I am a huge fan of this twin look. From the classy hair and make-up to the extravagantly puffed sleeves, Lisa and Jess look like total rock stars in their custom Zian Couture. May they live on in style 4ever.

I could go on and on about all of these looks (plus 16 others I chose but didn’t include), but I tend to have a habit of making these articles 2000 words long. So, here are a few other looks that I just had to mention – both the good and the bad – which were the results of an Instagram poll I was uploading live to @__esimo as the ARIA’s were being broadcast. Who were your favourites from the night? Send me a DM on Instagram or comment below, I would love to hear other people’s thoughts!

Until next time,
